Located on the northwest coast of Borneo, Brunei is a mysterious "shipwreck adventure paradise" in Southeast Asia. From WWII-era imperial warships to decommissioned steel oil rigs, its underwater scenery combines history with boundless vitality, prompting everyone who has been to rave: "Brunei is truly a seriously underrated dive destination!"
Trip Highlights & Features
【Classic Shipwrecks & Signature Dive Sites】
Bolkiah Wreck
Historical Background:
One of Brunei's most iconic shipwreck dive sites. Bolkiah is the surname of Brunei's Sultan family, and under Bruneian law, any vessel bearing a royal name cannot be sold for scrap or dismantled. So after being decommissioned, it was deliberately scuttled by the Royal Brunei Navy in 1992—essentially a formal "sea burial."
Dive Site Features:
Because it wasn't lost to a maritime disaster, the Bolkiah Wreck's structure is remarkably well preserved, almost like an underwater time capsule. Upon descending, you first encounter dense schools of fish circling around the upper deck; venturing into the shadowy corners of the weathered deck, you'll find large predatory fish lying in wait; swimming to the ship's bottom, you'll meet a giant grouper nearly 150 cm long that has taken up residence there, like a deep-sea guardian of the royal capsule. It's the perfect setting for wreck penetration and capturing grand shots. Relatively beginner-friendly with gentle currents, suitable for divers of all levels.
Underwater Scenery:
The hull is gently embraced by colorful hard and soft corals, home to an incredibly rich variety of fish, and within the coral crevices you can find all kinds of nudibranchs and seahorses—delightful surprises for macro enthusiasts.
Dolphin 88 Wreck
Historical Background:
This is a modern shipwreck that only sank on July 6, 2013—a cargo vessel registered in Kuching Port, Sarawak, Malaysia. It happened to be a Saturday evening at 8:25 PM; on its voyage from Kuching to Lawas, it broke into two and sank off Pelong Rocks due to severe weather, about 3.5 nautical miles from Meragang Beach. It was carrying 3,500 tons of stone, all 11 foreign crew members were rescued, and there was no oil spill. This wreck is the youngest and best-preserved member of Brunei's shipwreck family.
Dive Site Features:
The hull lies half-tilted on the seabed, with a huge breach underneath. Divers with good buoyancy control can easily slip inside to see the interior structure, with light streaming in through the deck creating the illusion of walking through a time tunnel.
Underwater Scenery:
The entire wreck is like a large underwater ocean park, attracting large schools of fish and diverse marine life to gather here. Every snapshot captures a scene teeming with life.
Rig Reef
Historical Background:
An exclusive dive site that embodies Brunei's "oil empire" industrial character! Created by artificially sinking a decommissioned oil rig structure to the seabed.
Dive Site Features:
The oil rig is Brunei's most recognizable dive site—a decommissioned rig transformation project in collaboration between the Brunei government and British Shell. Rather than dismantling these steel frames, they placed them directly in the sea to form artificial structures. The crisscrossing lines of the steel framework, combined with light filtering through the gaps between the beams, make this a site that underwater photographers will go wild for—perfect for wide-angle shots, silhouettes, and portraits. Even beginner-level divers can descend with ease. The intricate steel geometric skeleton creates a one-of-a-kind visual style underwater, with vertically intersecting columns delivering a sci-fi "underwater industrial ruins" vibe.
Underwater Scenery:
The towering geometric steel framework attracts a spectacular jack storm and predatory big fish that patrol at high speed among the structures. The rich nutrients carried by the currents also cover the steel frames with vibrant soft corals, delivering an utterly unique visual impact.
Dive Resort's Exclusive Cuisine:
Say goodbye to the simple, basic meals of traditional dive trips! The dive resort serves exquisitely delicious signature home-style cuisine, and every meal leaves the group raving! It's truly hard to imagine from photos alone just how thoughtful and delicious it is. Here, the chef prepares refined dishes using fresh local ingredients—from breakfast, lunch, and afternoon tea to dinner, the owner proudly says: "Even if you stayed here for a whole month, you'd never eat the same dish twice!"
Diverse Local Cuisine:
This trip takes you to savor Brunei's most famous specialty restaurants, with every meal something to look forward to. From the steaming, authentic Southeast Asian street food at the famous Pasar Malam (Dollar Night Market)—classic satay, nasi katok, and all kinds of durian that durian lovers can't miss—to afternoon tea at the Princess Café, refined and creative vegetarian cuisine, traditional yet diverse authentic Bruneian fare, and richly fragrant freshly baked Indian naan with a curry feast.
Every restaurant is a pocket-list favorite certified by local foodies, letting your taste buds embark on a top-tier culinary tour rich in layers of flavor!
In-Depth Land Culture Tour:
We have specially arranged private transfers throughout with a professional local guide accompanying you, taking you through royal palaces, Islamic sanctuaries, and natural ecology to deeply unravel the mysteries of this enigmatic Islamic empire!
